Fuel for Life: Milk and Cookies--Lactation Cookie Recipe
When I was about 8.5 months pregnant, I started researching different types of food that might help boost lactation. Who knew there were so many ways to naturally aid milk production? Did you know that peanut butter has magical milk producing powers?? YOU'RE WELCOME.
Although some may say that these are old wives tales, when you're a new mother trying to figure out how in the world you're going to feed your baby entirely from something that only you can produce, you'll do just about anything. Here is a list of foods that I found to be extremely helpful early on.
In preparation for my daughter's arrival, I decided to play around with a few lactation cookie recipes I found. I thought, why not? Even if they don't actually work, at least I knew they'd taste good. One afternoon pretty close to my due date, I made myself a batch. They were amazing. A perfect blend between a chocolate chip cookie and a granola bar. It took every ounce of willpower for me not to eat the entire batch right then and there. After a few more samples, I packed them up and popped them in the freezer in anticipation for the big day.
Whether they truly helped or not, almost 10 months later, my daughter and I are still going strong. I noticed that diet definitely played a huge role in milk production. On the days when I didn't drink enough water or didn't eat enough, my supply dipped. Research suggests that a breastfeeding mother should consume 300-500 extra calories per day and drink plenty of water, especially if exercising. After playing around with the ingredients, here is my take on the chocolate chip lactation cookie. This recipe makes 24-36 cookies depending on the size. I suggest storing them in an airtight container in the fridge as they are a bit crumbly due to the use of coconut oil.
2 tbs flax seed meal
4 tbs water
1 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup raw sugar
1/4 cup stevia in the raw
1 ripe banana, mashed
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups almond flour
2 cups rolled oats
2-4 tbs brewer's yeast
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup mini chocolate chips
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a small bowl, combine flax seed meal and water and set aside.
3. In a large bowl combine sugar, vanilla, coconut oil, and mashed banana.
4. Add flax and mix well.
5. In a separate bowl, add almond meal and then sift brewer's yeast, baking soda, and salt.
7. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet and mix well.
8. Stir in oats and chocolate chips.
9. Place dough mixture in refrigerator for about 5 minutes, just to let everything firm up.
10. Scoop rounded tablespoon sized portions of dough and place them on a cookie sheet.
11. Bake for 12 minutes. Edges may brown slightly which is fine. If your cookie still feels too soft, pop them back in the oven for 1-2 more minutes.
12. Once out of the oven, let cool for about 5-10 minutes before moving.

WARNING: Husbands will try to steal your cookies-- once they get a taste, it's all over. Lying to them and telling them it will make them lactate will only deter them for so long...Trust me.
